Why Do Women Shame Women?

The image above has been circulating on the internet for awhile and I have to admit that it has always bugged me. Every time I see it posted on one of the various Facebook groups I follow, I instantly become irritated. It irks me for various reasons.

  1. It implies that one type of body is better than another.
  2. It implies that girls that exercise and are healthy but happen to have really fast metabolisms are not sexy.
  3. It really is stupid since don’t people often see you in clothes? I mean, if I had to choose then I would want to be confident in my daily look then when I am and alone. So, I find that the message they are trying to imbue does not even make sense!

This new trend to shame the skinny girls is not ok. I had the same reaction when I listened to All About That Base for the first time. I loved that she had this central message to embrace your curves. However, why does embracing your own body mean that you should negative talk about another body type? If you do not know the song, she sings, “boys like a little more booty to hold at night” and “and all the right junk in all the right places”. She has other lyrics that spark acceptance such as “every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top”. I just wish she would focus on body positivity instead of having to sing that men don’t think that skinny girls are sexy. Why even sing about what guys think?

I am not skinny. I am not overweight. My body type perfectly defines the average or medium-sized build. I think that everyone should attempt to embrace whatever body type they have. Everyone should feel like they feel sexy whether that is with clothes on or naked. What really matters is what you think of yourself, right? Anyways, I just had to get that off my chest. And maybe if you see it posted somewhere on online, you can stand up for the women that are being shamed in the post.

xx
